Program Details

Art & Spanish Program at Battle Creek Central

21st Century will be providing high school students the opportunity to gain .5 credit in either Art or Spanish for the third year in a row. Students eligible for this program are those who would like to get credit early, need to make up credit, or did not have the opportunity to take these classes.

Students enrolled in Art or Spanish receive 2 hours of instruction from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. These students eat lunch after school with other 21st Century students and then they break up into their classes. Participants in this program do not follow the same schedule as nonparticipants. There is a calendar specificially for the Art and Spanish students. Due to the nature of the course, participants do not have an enrichment period where they go on field trips such as the Family YMCA, Midway Roller Rink, Nottke's Bowling, etc...The Art and Spanish classes have field trips planned exclusively for their students such as dining at a Mexican restaurant, visiting museums, or attending workshops at the Art Center of Battle Creek.

Spanish activities include learning through games, songs, hands-on experience, and technology. Some favorite activities are making pinatas, learning how to Salsa dance, cooking authentic Mexican food, and researching Spanish-speaking countries.

Art activities include drawing, painting, graphic design, sculpture, fiber arts, sketchbooks and portfolio development. Art students are given a unique opportunity to create individual projects, working in either a clay studio class or exploring Metal Jewelry making processes at the Art Center of Battle Creek.

Art and Spanish classes can also be taken during the summer program at Northwestern Middle School. Students that complete the 6 weeks of instruction during the summer camp and can pass the final exam will receive .5 credit towards graduation.
